Tintagel Castle Bridge​

Tintagel Castle in North Cornwall, England, is one of the most spectacular historic sites in Britain. A new footbridge was built in 2019 recreating the historic crossing from the mainland to the headland remaining ruins from the historic castle, facilitating the visitors' experience. This attraction is one of English Heritage’s top five, with around 200,000 visitors a year.​

The bridge is set 57m above sea level and comprises two independent 33m long cantilevers sections with a 40mm gap in the middle. Each cantilever is made of two welded plate box girders.

CaSE provided a number of services to the maintenance works that have followed the completion of the project:​

During the pre-construction phase, CaSE provided specialist construction and commercial advice and guidance of the rectification requirements as to overtake early signs of corrosion identified within the structure. This included the development of methodology, temporary work packages and schemes and building up of a cost plan.​

During the maintenance works, CaSE provided senior specialist and supervision personnel to manage the works and acting on behalf of American Bridge UK on the daily interaction with English Heritage (the Client).​

CaSE have been involved in the following temporary works design:

• Design of the underdeck access to facilitate inspections and remediation works.​
• Raised access walkway to allow visitors to go through the bridge deck while remediation works are ongoing.​
• Raised access support and encapsulation frame to ensure adequate environmental conditions to undertake the remediation works.​

In addition, CaSE have been appointed by English Heritage as Principal Designer during the maintenance works and have been engaged to compile the Health & Safety file for the project.
