Tintagel Castle in North Cornwall, England, is one of the most spectacular historic sites in Britain. A new footbridge was built in 2019 recreating the historic crossing from the mainland to the headland remaining ruins from the historic castle, facilitating the visitors' experience. This attraction is one of English Heritage’s top five, with around 200,000 visitors a year.
The bridge is set 57m above sea level and comprises two independent 33m long cantilevers sections with a 40mm gap in the middle. Each cantilever is made of two welded plate box girders.
CaSE provided a number of services to the maintenance works that have followed the completion of the project:
During the pre-construction phase, CaSE provided specialist construction and commercial advice and guidance of the rectification requirements as to overtake early signs of corrosion identified within the structure. This included the development of methodology, temporary work packages and schemes and building up of a cost plan.
During the maintenance works, CaSE provided senior specialist and supervision personnel to manage the works and acting on behalf of American Bridge UK on the daily interaction with English Heritage (the Client).
