The Union Chain Bridge refurbishment involves the complete removal, refurbishment and reinstallation of the deck and chains.
A temporary works system employing an overhead cable crane was developed to access the main span from above and below from suspended cradles and platforms without need to use the river below. Using their access and electric winches also suspended over the deck the entire deck was dismantled piece by piece. The chains were de- tensioned by suspending each one at a time from the cable crane, separating the chain at the English-side anchorage and hauling off to the loading area on land.
CaSE were employed as independent checker of temporary works.
